Words of Warning Though George Orwell is widely known as the conscience of a war-torn generation he had originally begun his life as Eric Arthur Blair. Born into the British colony of Motihari, Bengal, Eric spent much of his youth without a father. While his father oversaw exports under the Indian Civil Service his mother chose to raise both of her children in England where they were able to make do. Despite having no ill will towards being lower-upper-middle class he developed a distaste towards the English prep school system after witnessing the delegation of privileges to certain students. Soon after, he would continue to experience mistreatment dealt under the hands of the Indian Imperial Police. Thus, after being disillusioned by British imperialism and showing signs of weakening health he departed and settled into a cycle of odd jobs. Eventually Blair began putting his life amongst the working poor onto paper; taking on the identity of the man we know today –George Orwell. Much can be said about how Blair’s childhood education had come to affect his view and relationship with authority. He recounted such miseries in his essay titled, â€Å"Such, such were the joys,† in which he detailed the many disparities between his treatment and the treatment of students seen as more valuable. Breast Implants In the early 1980’s breast implants began gaining popularity, but they have been on the market since the early 1960’s. They were invented by plastic surgeons Cronin and Gerow. Dow Corning began manufacturing them commercially in 1962. Today over two million women have undergone breast augmentation surgery. There are many negative consequences that may arise from the surgery, and there is always the risk of infection or rupture. When beginning my research on the subject I assumed there would be a plethora of information. I was shocked to find out that there wasn’t. Silicone breast implants have been around for 40 years and there have been very few studies on their consequences, and possible effects on a woman’s body. Women view themselves, and judge themselves by what they see on television, movies, and in magazines. The way the media portrays women is not natural. Models and actresses are, on the most part, thin and have seemingly flawless bodies. A young impressionable girl may feel the need to look like this herself; therefore she will grow up thinking she has to be perfect and she is not good enough. Girls as young as 11 are now contemplating plastic surgery. Breast implants are being put into the bodies of 15 year olds. A fifteen year old girl does not have the mental capacity to make a life altering decision like this. This shows us that there is a problem with the way children are being raised in today’s society. Any child under the age of 18 needs parental consent to have surgery, and I doubt that a 15 year old girl has the money saved up to be able to afford breast implants. This means that parents are footing the bill, and putting their daughter’s lives in the hands of plastic surgeons. They do this all in the name of beauty. Because the average breast implant lasts only 7-12 years by the time a young woman is 22 she may be having her second breast augmentation surgery. I started with its tail fin curving up to draw the rest of it’s tail before thrusting my energy into drawing the dorsal fin. Then came the head and the snout. How perfect! Then the drawing became more detailed: I was in the hammock, looking up at the sky with my crossed legs carelessly dangling out of the hammock with my fingers stroking the sand. A glass of lemonade and a pail with a toy shovel sticking out sat near my hammock. An impressive sand castle guarded by a moat and declared mine with a flag made from a stick and a leaf stood nearby. A sail boat calmly drifted in the ocean. I looked over it, erasing what needed to be erased and detailing what needed to be detailed. Then, I finished. I posted the drawing to Facebook. Then, feeling extra proud of my work, I showcased my work on my refrigerator. I had so much pride in my picture that I thought it would persuade my parents to take me to the beach. It didnt, but at least I had something to make my beach-bound friends envious: the Perfect Beach Trip.
